Burtons St Leonards
History
In the late 18th century the medical profession began to appreciate the restorative properties of sea air and seawater and encouraged many wealthier people to visit the seaside for the benefit of their health.
James Burton, a distinguished architect and builder who'd already developed developing large areas of London, saw the need for an elegant seaside resort to cater for the health and recreation of these wealthy and influential visitors.
He chose the deserted area of land two miles west of Hastings as the site for his venture. He began work on his new town in February 1828 after buying land in the parish of St Leonards for £7,800.
