A Day in Hastings

If you are planning to come to Hastings for the day, start off your visit with a ride on the West Hill Funicular Railway to the Smugglers Adventure and Hastings Castle up on the West Hill.

Then make sure you take the steps that descend from the West Hill to Coburg Place and the High Street.  Stop off at the Old Town Hall Museum in the High Street to learn something of the history of Hastings old fishing quarter.  A tour with one of the experienced Blue Badge guides will bring to life the history and ghosts of the medieval streets and tiny courtyards or 'twittens' (tiny passages leading to pretty courtyards).

On the Stade (a word dating from before 1066, meaning 'landing place') you will find fishermen working on their boats, which make up the biggest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe.  The unique Hastings Net Shops - nearly 50 black wooden sheds standing in neat rows on this shingle beach - will provide photographers with a fascinating subject.  Nearby you will find the Fishermen's Museum, the Shipwreck and Coastal Heritage Centre and Underwater World.

For a bird's eye view of all of this, take a ride up to the top of the East Hill in the East Hill Funicular Railway.  This is also where the Hastings Country Park begins and is an ideal spot for a picnic, a game of football or a cliff-top walk.
