Festival Launch

'Walking the Fish' procession - Saturday 22 September
Starts 10am Breeds Place (opposite the fountain)

To open the festival, there will be a colourful and musical procession of giant fish and seafood effigies called Walking the Fish.  This tradition started 9 years ago, with Radiator Arts group and children from schools in the area working together to fashion sculptures that reflected the community in which they lived.

Saturday 22 September in The Sole Entertainment Marquee and Bar on the Beach

The Sole will be open to the public from 12noon to 7pm on Saturday and entry is free.  Top class local bands and acts will perform here. The Bar will serve local beers, local English wine, fruit juices and soft drinks. Tuck into Fish and Game barbequed on the beach.

Please note: only food and drink purchased on the Festival site may be consumed in the Marquee.

2pm - 3.15pm:  Rude Knot To

Rude Knot To are a Celtic influenced trio who have wowed audiences throughout Europe and the USA.

3.45pm - 5pm:  Band of Two

Band of Two Musicians Peter Fyfe and Garry Blakeley perform goodtime Celtic music on a variety of instruments including guitars, fiddle and tenor banjo.

5.30pm - 6.45pm:  Buick 6

Buick 6 play delta blues like you've never heard before, linking traditional and modern blues with folk.

Sunday 23 September in The Sole Entertainment Marquee and Bar on the Beach

The Sole will be open to the public from 12noon to 6pm on Sunday and entry is free.  Top class local bands and acts will perform here.  The Bar will serve local beers, local English wine, fruit juices and soft drinks.  Tuck into Fish and Game barbequed on the beach.

10am - 12noon:  Jazz Breakfast with the Liane Carroll Trio

Liane Carroll Liane won the Best Singer and Best of Jazz categories in the BBC Jazz awards 2005 - the only person to have won two awards in one year.  Since then she has won two further Best Singer awards, the latest being the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Awards in 2007.
Breakfast:  Locally baked organic pastry, plus organic fruit juice or fairtrade coffee.
Tickets:  £8.50/£7 concessions (proof required)
Children under 14 free with an adult but free entry breakfast not included

Danceable, rhythmic music from this critically acclaimed duo.

1pm - 1.30pm and 3.30pm - 4pm: the Fabulous Cinque Ports Lindy Hoppers

Fabulous Cinque Ports Lindy HoppersThis local vintage dancing troupe will entertain with the energetic Lindy Hop.

4.15pm - 5.30pm: The Rhythm Doctors

The Rhythm Doctors play their individual style of rhythm and blues.

English Wine Tent at The Plaice

Bunch of grapesThis promises to be a memorable experience for both the wine connoisseur and novice alike.  Entry to the wine marquee only £2, including free festival wine glass.

Within a radius of 25 miles from Hastings there are at least 18 vineyards, many of them producing award-winning wines that bear comparison with the best in the world.

In the English Wine Tent on the main festival site there will be five vineyards over the weekend:

Come and take your time to browse and talk to wine producers themselves.  Each of these vineyards will be bringing a wide range of their finest wines and fruit juices for you to try and to buy - by the glass, or the case!

There will be plenty of space for you to sit and soak up the atmosphere, and free bread will be available to dry off the palate before you try another glass of something different.  You will also be able to buy tapas to enjoy with your wine.

A selection of art by members of the South Coast Artists' Group will be on display over the weekend along with a special floral centrepiece provided by Shimizu Flowers of the High Street, Hastings Old Town.

Saturday 22 September at The Plaice

Seafood and Wine Festival 2006

The Plaice opens at 11am and entry to the market stalls and cooking area is free.  Try delicious seafood dishes with international influences.  Stalls will sell fresh Sussex and Kent produce, local crafts and high quality English wines. Local chefs and fish experts will perform fish cookery demonstrations.

Tickets for these Wine Tasting Events will be available on the door but spaces are limited so book in advance at Hastings Information Centre

12noon - 1pm: Organic Wine Production with James Davies

James Davies, vineyard manager at Sedlescombe Organic Vineyard, will be talking about the special methods used to make the wines and there will be an opportunity to try some select vintages.

1.45pm - 2.45pm: Learn to Taste Wine with Alexander Carr-Taylor

Alexander Carr-Taylor from Carr-Taylor Vineyards, hosts this fun and informative wine tasting.

3.30pm - 4.30pm: English Wine with John Radford

Sussex based writer, broadcaster and award-winning author of books on wine and food, John Radford will be focussing this tasting session on wines produced in Hampshire, Sussex and Kent.

12noon - 1pm: Method Champenoise with David Carr-Taylor

Carr-Taylor Vineyards produce gold-medal winning sparkling wines.  Learn some secrets about their production and enjoy tasting the wines.

1.45pm - 2.45pm: Learn to to taste wine with Alexander Carr-Taylor

Alexander Carr-Taylor from Carr-Taylor Vineyards, hosts this fun and informative wine tasting.

3.30pm - 4.30pm: Matching fish with wine hosted by John Radford

Wine specialist and connoisseur John Radford will be offering his expert guidance on which local wines and local fish can be perfect partners.

The Lobsters: There's a nip in the air! (Saturday only)

Two people dressed as lobsters

Meet Claude and Shelley, live and kicking land-lubber lobsters providing wandering entertainment throughout both days.

Punch and Judy:
Saturday: 1pm - 1.30pm and 3.15pm - 3.45pm
Sunday: 12.30pm - 1pm

Punch and JudyOn the beach next to the Sole entertainment Marquee and Lifeboat Station.  This show is based more on family life than the traditional Punch and Judy punch-ups and everyone lives happily ever after!

Butler and Brown on Safari

A mix between Laurel and Hardy and Jeeves and Wooster, Butler and Brown are stuck in the roaring twenties and create merriment wherever they go.  Wandering entertainment throughout both days.

The Pirates (Sunday only)

Ahoy there! Long John Stilter and Captain Jack Parrot, larger-than-life pirates will be sighted swashbuckling around the seafront!

Saturday and Sunday - 12noon: The Story of The Stade

Meet outside the Fishermen's Museum for a fascinating walk with local historian Steve Peak around this historic part of the town.  Part of the tour involves walking on the working beach and would not be suitable for those with mobility problems or wheelchair users.

Strolling Jazz

Keep your ears open for the Sounds of New Orleans with our local strolling bands over the weekend.  On Saturday you can hear Expedient Brass Band and on Sunday Creole Jazz will get your toes tapping.

Fish heads

Saturday and Sunday 2pm - 3pm: Time and Plaice

An illustrated talk, by local photographer George Greaves, through the past and present of the Hastings fishing fleet.  Takes place at the Fishermens Museum, entry is free but donations welcome.

Painted pebbles on the beach

On the beach next to The Sole Entertainments Marquee.  Play workers on hand to create sea-themed crafts with kids.

Alicantina

Authentic Spanish paella cooked on the festival site by Spanish food experts Alicantina.

Arcade Fisheries

Identify the 3 varieties of local fish on display at Arcade Fisheries, and you could win a tasty selection of local fish.  Saturday 22 September only.
